Local Artists and Cornwall’s New Reusable Bag Company Team up to Make Cornwall Greener

Cornwall – Still using plastic bags when you go shopping?  Well, owners of a local reusable bag company, Steward Bags have teamed up with two local artists to inspire you to bring your own fashionable reusable bag when you are out and about.  Josée Lemieux-Bailey and her husband Greg Bailey have created 4 limited edition “art on canvas” bags featuring the artworks by Tracy-Lynn Chisholm and Emily MacLeod.

“We are excited to have Emily and Tracy on board our new project.  It’s a great joint effort between artists and green enthusiasts to invite SD&G residents to use reusable bags for all of their shopping”, says Greg.  “What better way to promote Cornwall and its local talent then on a stylish bag that will help reduce the plastic bags in our area landfills?”,  Josée adds.

Steward Bags will be launching their new line of fashion bags this weekend at the Harvest Home Show taking place at the Civic Complex.  Only 300 copies of each print will be available.  The bags are made of 100% certified organic cotton canvas.

Steward Bags, The Environment & You

Toronto – Stop the damage, Mother Earth has had enough! Environmental issues are weighing heavily on our minds these days.  The Baileys of Cornwall, Ontario have come with a green solution to help tackle the plastic bag problem.  Greg and Josée Bailey, both school teachers, have taken lessons from their classrooms and put them into action in their daily lives by creating “Steward Bags”. These reusable, certified organic bags have been created to replace the flimsy, clear plastic bags used for loose fruits and vegetables.

This dynamic husband and wife team have done more than teach stewardship as a concept; they have developed an innovative bag! “What bothered me the most was that 6-7 of these plastic bags ended up in our kitchen garbage.  As a grade 6 teacher at a local “eco-school” I had made a commitment along with my students to reduce my family’s ecological foot print. This weekly plastic produce bag routine didn’t jive with that commitment, says Josée.  “We are not just talking about environmental stewardship, we are living proof that anyone can create a green solution and make a difference”, her husband Greg adds.

The bags are made of 100% certified organic cotton netting material which allows check-out clerks to see the type of produce you are purchasing.  A handy drawstring at the top of the bag stops produce from tumbling out.   You may have already made the switch to reusable bags for transporting your groceries home.  “The Steward Bag, re-usable produce bag is the next logical step in waste reduction”, says Greg Bailey.  They are available at The Healthy Butcher located at 565 Queen Street West, 298 Eglinton Ave West in Toronto, as well as their Bruce Street location in Kitchener, or online at www.stewardbags.ca. For a complete list of locations see their website.
